NSW Teachers Federation busy year on GLBTI issues
NSW Teachers Federation has been busy addressing GLBTI issues in a number of ways throughout this year.
• We have been part of Fair Day at Mardi Gras to raise our profile within the GLBTI community, and supported events such as the Same Sex Marriage Equality Rallies and Wear It Purple Day.
• Federation also supported author Daniel Witthaus on his Australian tour of regional areas, hosting 2 hour seminars which were held in a variety of locations around the state (Lismore, Newcastle, Sydney, Bathurst, Broken Hill). The meetings addressed how to interrupt and challenge homophobia and provided teachers with the opportunity to meet and discuss strategies and frameworks for understanding sexual identity, coming out and challenging a variety of homophobic behaviours in young people.
• In November Federation has organised training for teachers on “Safety, Bias and GLBT issues” with trainers form the USA and we continue to liaise with community organisations, politicians and the DET to address GLBTI issues in schools.
